Phonics & Reading

In the EYFS we follow the Read Write Inc. phonic programme. In the reception year the children learn the letter sounds and they eventually learn to blend these sounds into words. Phonics is taught daily and the children's progress is assessed half termly. We encourage the children to read books at home and in school that match their phonic ability. Children will bring home Read Write Inc. phonics books matched to the level that they are working at in school, they will also bring home reading for pleasure book that they choose from our class library. Mrs Wilton books to the class several times a day, children vote to choose which book they would like to choose that day. The children also have 'Drawing Club' where they listen to a different story each week and produce a drawing based on the character, setting and adventure, these stories have added magic sounds, words and eventually sentences to develop children's writing skills through their enjoyment of story. 'Drawing Club' increases children sharing skills, fine motor skills, early writing and vocabulary.  'Drawing club' develops a love of reading and encourages the children to use their imagination through the magic world of story.
