Reading

Phonics & Reading

In the EYFS we follow the RWI phonic programme. In the reception year the children learn the letter sounds and they eventually learn to blend these sounds into words. Phonics is taught daily and the children's progress is assessed half termly. We encourage the children to read books at home and in school that match their phonic ability. The RWI books are called 'satchel books.' Additionally we send home a reading book from our reading scheme. This is called the Oxford reading scheme. The teacher reads story and fiction books to the class several times a day. The children also learn 'Talk for Writing' stories, they learn to re-tell a story each half term. These stories tend to be traditional stories and over time the children can recite the stories and use the story ideas to write their own versions when they are ready.
